Reunion

I hate living with regrets and I have a very small regret regarding yesterday, we didn't take pictures. We didn't think about it until Carol was having us wash all our makeup off, after Valerie was gone, for our spa treatments and then of course, it was out of the question to even get the three of us still there. The rest of the day was perfect though.
I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive about our reunion, 3 out of 4 of my best friends from high school, in one room after 22 years. After 22 years of being in separate places, with separate lives, homes, experiences....22 years. I had seen all of them over the years at different times, and some of them had seen each other as well but to have us all in one place. Would we find stuff to talk about? Would we feel awkward? Had our lives grown so different that we wouldn't know what to say to the other? The answer was no, in a big way.
It seemed like immediately we feel into an easy, been around forever atmosphere and the topic of the day seemed to be our kids with a little of our parents mixed in for good measure. I was the last to get married and the first to have a kid, the three of them followed very shortly after with Tammy's daughter graduating this past May and Dani's and Valerie's being seniors this coming year so of course our topics was our teenagers and how we love them to death and how we have managed to keep them from being the death of us. There is just something so familiar and trusting and true about these girls. They knew me when....I knew them when......every blank possible can be filled in there. I have friends now that I cherish but there is just so much of my history that they weren't a part of that it just isn't the same. That feeling, that truly deep feeling of love and understanding is something I never realized I lost as we started families and started living our lives. We were standing in the bathroom taking off the makeup when Dani said basically the same thing, we all have friends, but not friends like this. I made the statement I wanted us to get back to this point before something happened that we "needed" to get back to this point. Several years ago, there was a movie about these women, there for each other through thick and thin, after that movie I started trying to figure out just who my Ya=Ya's would be. As I said earlier, we all have good friends now, friends we see every day and friends we know we would be there for them and they for us but I realized yesterday that these people, the ones that have "seen it all" so to speak are the ones who complete that circle for me. As we left yesterday, we vowed to do this again, soon. Part of me so wanted to hang on to it, to that feeling of completeness that was with me yesterday and part of me knows I will this time. I think they all feel the same way. So, we are ready to plan our next outing and make this a rest of our lives regular thing, even though we are scattered all over the state. Funny, I was the one who ran the farthest when we were young, and I am the one who is sitting within a mile of where we all came together. As Dani walked out of her parent's house yesterday, she yelled to her dad, "I'm going to Mindy's" as she said she had done a thousand times before. I'm hoping for many, many more of those times to come and Thank God he let us all be together yesterday. We were missing Tina yesterday but are hoping she can be there for our next get together, because I know two things, there will definitely be a next and it will definitely be soon. I can't help but hear the final words from the movie Stand By Me: I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve; does anyone?

Mark another of the bucket list- we made it to the Muny!

First off, I have to tell you, I am getting really used to Andrew being off at 11 every Saturday. We have never had that. Normally, he would get a Saturday or two off every couple months, this is about as perfect as it can get. I get to spend the morning cleaning house and doing all my "Saturday" stuff and then he is home and we can do something.

This week we headed to the Muny, what a wonderful date night. On the way down, I told him to pick where we were eating supper......the Old Spaghetti Factory was his choice! I love that place and have managed to eat there once a month for the past three months (trying to figure out how NOT to break the trend!). So we started with dinner then went to the Muny. The preshow was a dance troupe and they were amazingly good. Then to the show. 31 years ago, Jennifer Holliday made Effie White famous. Jennifer Holliday came to the Muny to play Effie one more time.  I worried how this would be as we saw Grease one time that the actors were much older than they should have been. Jennifer Holliday was very capable of pulling it off. And of course, as she belted out the last of And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going, the crowd was on their feet. Wow, she has a set of pipes.  The whole show was amazing and we even managed to make it home without too much sleepiness. We stopped at Vandalia and got MickeyD fries and one more drink but we made it home right before 2.

I didn't take pictures at the Muny just because they don't like for you too, we were in section A so we had great seats. Andrew and I each took a picture of each other at the OSF though and Andrew took pictures of our food. Can you tell the boy likes toasted ravioli? Should I tell you we split an order for appetizers too?

Non-eventful.......

This is one of those rare "just life" weeks at our house but somehow whenever I look back on it, it really has been a "little" eventful. I love my job, everyone who reads this on a regular basis knows that beyond a shadow of a doubt but this week, I wish everything I have to do was stretched out over more than a few days. Most if it got done but my schedule is still full and I felt really guilty but I HAD to get a few things taken care of here so I took off at noon yesterday.

Of course we are in our second week of the cooling program, one more to go. For the most part, it is going smoothly, as smoothly as it can go when you are trying to cram 1500+ people into our offices over a 12 day period. The girls are more than likely going home every night exhausted.

Just a little rundown of what I have done this week:
  • Checked and cleaned 4 Family Advocate laptops
  • Met with Head Start staff to start some Distance Learning trainings, this will be posted on a private area of our website, which means I will be the one getting it there and maintaining it.
  • Worked with Xerox to get the Head Start printer up and and running
  • Done 13 out of 20 pages of the Weatherization Assessor forms for their new toughbooks. ( the old forms had lots of things that needed circled, etc. that doesn't work well with the pen from the toughbooks so I am transforming them to having checkboxes and dropdowns that are more tablet friendly).
  • Sent about 15 letters to PIPP clients who are late paying their bills.
  • Reconciled the PIPP numbers
  • Did a training for Weatherization on how to use their new toughbooks.
  • Participated in a PIPP training
  • Taught class on Tuesday evening
  • Had a make-up class with one student.
  • ordered a new system for one of the Senior Centers
  • went to Robinson to work on a Sr. Center computer
  • installed more software on the toughbooks
  • worked with the day-in, day-out problems associated with cooling.
I think that was about it as far as work, never a dull moment and definitely not doing the "same ole, same ole" everyday.

On a personal level, I had some exciting things at home too. One of my biggest was finding a long lost friend on facebook this week. It is amazing to me how you can spend the greater part of a couple of years with a person and then totally lose track of them. When I worked at Richard's Farm, I met Rob Tobias (who now spells his name with two b's but it was one at the time). Rob was the manager of Richard's Refinery, where I eventually ended up as kitchen manager. Then, after those days were over and I thought I had to have my little Z24 and was working two jobs to pay for it, I went to work for Robb at Altamont. He is one of those people I really never thought I would lose track of and I did. I had another friend like that, Mike Gordon. Mike helped get me and Andrew together and he was also one I thought I would never stop communicating with. Mike was dead almost a year and a half before I even knew it. I try not to let those things happen anymore. I don't like living with regrets and not keeping in touch with people I really care about is important so Robb, if you are reading this....know that I am glad I found you too! The last time I saw him, I was pregnant with Robert, so you can see how long that has been!

We finally got the auto insurance ordeal taken care of too. Robert was excluded from our policy in June, we thought we had until August to find another company but when he got his Grand Cherokee the insurance announced it was the only vehicle he was insured to drive. We had been with State Farm for 20 years but rules are rules so we had to switch. There are too many times we need to switch vehicles and yes, I know he is a little spoiled but having the Wrangler and him never being able to take the top off and even drive it to work just didn't feel right. As of the 25th of this month, we will all be back to being insured on all our cars. I knew it was going to be high, but it would have been high for his insurance anyway and it isn't like as if I didn't go through the exact same thing when I was young. I totalled my first car, three months after I got it, the insurance dropped me like a hot rock. Anyway, live and learn and hopefully Robert will be a lot more careful now.

So the week to come should be exciting, we have VBS starting Monday evening, 6-8:15 at the Hidalgo Independent Christian Church. Mom and I are doing the snacks, Andrew will have to be me Tuesday evening as I have class until 6:30 but it will all work out. If you have kids, it should be a good time.

Also, my new furniture is to be here sometime this week, I can't wait!

And then SATURDAY!!!  3 out of four of my best friends from high school will be here! Wish Tina was coming but she is going to be gone. I am having a friend of mine from work who does spa parties come that afternoon and give us some pampering. I am so excited and can't wait. The last time we were all in the same room at the same time was Tammy's wedding, 22 years ago.

So, this afternoon Andrew and I are headed to the Muny, looking forward to it, NOT looking forward to the drive home. I thought about getting a room and just coming home early in the morning but I figured there was a big chance we wouldn't get to sleep in a strange bed anyway so we are just going to take turns driving and make it home. When Robert and I go, he drives home, I am gonna miss that!

Happy Saturday!

OH, BTW, You can read my blog on your mobile phone now. it is set up with a special app to make it more user friendly. I put it on Andrew's and it works really well!

AND ONE MORE THING--- This week I hit over 30,000 hits to my blog...wow. I meet people a lot who I've never met before who are "blogstalkers", so give me a shoutout once in a while!

Week in Review

This week has been a duesy to say the least. Monday we finally got the word that we were starting a cooling program for our seniors and households with children under 5. I waited all day on Friday for the announcement and it didn't happen. Monday morning, I was told it would be announced sometime that day and sure enough, about 3 that afternoon, it came and was to start on Wednesday. Not much time to prepare but it looks like our field offices handled it with flying colors. I had tested the system the week before and it worked fine but when you get a thousand people accessing it at the same time instead of the three or four that was on it last week, you always run into problems so eventhough the first day didn't go smoothly, it went and that is the important thing.

Tuesday evening was my Experience Works class, they are doing very well and finished a flier this week. I am hoping they are all learning because I am focusing on making sure I don't leave anyone in the dust.

One day last week, I went to Weatherization to work on their emails, I brought home 5 brand new Toughbooks that they guys are going to start using to do their workorders and paperwork on instead of hand writing them and bringing them back to the office and putting them in the system. I have them all programed and when I went to put in their paperwork, I realized there was some things that could be done to make the process more user-friendly, so  have also spent the last few days turning regular documents into electronic documents. The guys are coming Tuesday morning for their training, I have one document that is 20 pages long that I haven't finished yet and will probably take some time but the rest of them are ready. There are days I am pulled between all the IT stuff and the LIHEAP stuff. LIHEAP has my heart as does the cause of our work in general but there are days the IT stuff is just a fun challenging diversion.

Friday evening, we went with Kelly to her TRiO Showcase. Her grandmother couldn't go and I think there should always be somebody there for a young person who is trying to achieve great things so Andrew and I took her. She got an award for perfect attendance and we know she had over 100% as far as her grades. Her main class was speech and that particular teacher didn't give any awards, he didn't even bother showing up, which bugs me but oh well. It is 6:41 a.m. on Sunday morning and Robert left at 6 to run Kelly to Olney to meet the bus and head to Chicago for 4 days. They have a lot to do and I hope she has a great time. I am envious of a couple of them because she is going to Medieval Times and having dinner on on of the Yachts, I love Medieval times and have never gotten to do the dinner thing. Looking forward to hearing all about it.

Also, a little excitement that happened this week, my tickets for the Fox and the Muny came. Next Saturday evening, Andrew and I will go to the Muny to see Dreamgirls and September 1, Robert and I are going to the Fox to see The Lion King. Two more things off my bucket list!

Andrew and I went to Owensboro last night to Moonlite BBQ, I found this place a few years ago as a stop on one of our vacations, I found it from the Food Network and when we realized it is only a half hour south of Evansville, we realized it could be a great "someplace to run away to", so we did, they have BBQ buffet, with beef, pork, chicken, mutton and fried shrimp. It is always so good and last nigh was no different.

All in all a good week, busy as usual, but good. Now to start another busy week today. It's Simple Blessings Sunday, where a few of us from church go to sing to an assisted living facility in Casey and then to a couple from our church who can't get out. I love this day, it i a huge blessing for me.

Kelly getting her award Friday night

Yeah! My tickets to two of my favorite places!

Happy Sunday Everyone, May God send you a great week!

The 4th, Better Late than Never

I meant to get this blogged Thursday morning, Andrew was the photographer that day though and my request to get all the photos to me by 5 am on Thursday apparently fell on deaf ears. So, I finally have them.

We started out the 4th with a trip to the Lincoln Museum. Janette had never been there so it was something I really wanted her to see. She was as impressed as I believed she would be. We got there about 10:30 and started home a little after 3. I think on top of everything else, that museum is just the right size that you can see everything and be there just the right amount of time.  Of course pictures in the museum are limited so we each got our pictures taken with the Lincolns to commemorate our visit.

We arrived back home around 6 and left around 7 for Olney, we ate supper at the Chinese restaurant and then watched the fireworks. I know they don't compare to places like St. Louis but I think for a small town, they do a really good job.

The rest of the week has been kind of a blur. Work took some turns this week that threw some rocks in the cogs but I got through it, just stayed very busy but at the same time got many things accomplished. I love coming home with that sense of accomplishment.

So today is a typical Saturday. The big news of the day is I am sick of my hair and have a feeling before the day is over, it is going to be a LOT shorter. I have loved being able to braid it and put it up but even looking at the pictures from Wednesday shows me that I don't like it plastered to my head like that and would rather have it short with some height to it. So, I don't even know where I am getting it cut, probably someplace in Effingham where I can just walk in and do it but I am pretty sure today is the day.

That's about it for now, happy Saturday!

Welcome to July!

I survived June!! I am about to think I need a t-shirt to celebrate. It was definatley a whirlwind month but I am still very happy to have been in it. Can you believe it is July already? This year is half over, and to look back at Christmas and realize how much has happened, it's just a little unreal.

I told my mom this week, this is the month we are going to get our lives back to normal. If you think about it, things have been out of sorts since the 23rd of February, that's a long time for an organziational freak not to have any organization!

So, yesterday, I made a new menu for July, filling in the nights that Andrew and Robert are in charge of supper-- color coded of course, then Andrew, who has told me he would have a set schedule so he could cook every Wednesday and Thursday, tells me he has to work week after next on Thursday. I told him to trade wih Robert on cooking nights that week and go on. But yes, I was a little upset that my nice neat menu already wasn't perfect, oh well.

Now for the excitement of July:  my father-in-law and his girlfriend should be here before the day is over. Hopefully, we can have a family outing on Wednesday, I am looking at Indianapolis then back to Casey for fireworks. The 11th, I have a training with Rural Development for a new project we are taking on. The 11th and 12, we also have LIHEAP monitoring from the state....still working on getting ready for that and then, here it comes....the 13th (which happens to be FRIDAY the 13th) I am taking the day off!

And maybe a few days the next week too!

I started the Experience Works class Thursday evening, I have 10 students, all over 55, it is going to be a fun class to say the least. It runs through the 14th of August, which is just in time to get ready for LIHEAP to start September 1, so without really thinking about it, I kinda screwed myself out of a weeks vacation for the summer. I may still take a week the first week of August and just come in for class, we will have to wait and see on that.

One neat thing though, I got paid seperate for Experience Works and had some expense checks saved up so yesteday I went and ordered new furniture for my living room. The furniture I had up there was okay but honestly I gave less than $100 for all of it on ebay and the couch clashed with the chairs so it had always been slipcovered. I am so in love with what we are getting! I had wanted feet and curves, this is in the room with the fireplace so it is more formal. I fell in love with a fabric and low and behold, I could get the chairs in that fabric, which has lots of green and browns but also some fushia and orange. The couch is going to be chocolate brown and it will be here by the end of the month.

Also big news this month, one of my bucket list items was to get my friends together. We are doing that on the 28th!

Yep, July looks promising, I have never had so many times though that I have thought to myself, "We make plans and God laughs", I do know nothing has to go as planned but hopefully God thinks we have been around the mountains enough this year and just lets things be calm for a while.

Happy July AND Happy Sunday!
